About O'sechill

The Story Behind O’sechill’s Seongsu Space

While reconstructing O’sechill’s Hapjeong branch in Seongsu, there were two main things we thought important. The first was locality. More recently expressed as localism, this is a way to respect the unique sentiment and tone of Seongsu while building upon it with the essence of O’sechill. Simply taking O’sechill and moving it from Hapjeong as-is would not have been a way to respect this new area.

It was on this basis we broke free from space — and acquired a sense of place. The literal meaning of space is an empty, unoccupied area. It is only when values or experiences are added to this space does it become a place, a fusion of a variety of subjective experiences. And only by building O’sechill’s atmosphere and key values beneath our respect for this area called Seongsu can O’sechill exist as a place and build upon people’s memories.
Then, what does it mean to be like Seongsu? As a semi-industrial area where workshops and factories were located, extravagant décor and grandeur did not suit it, and so we went through the process of building O’sechill bit by bit, or like layering concrete, slowly over a long period of time. While it is a newly opened space, traces of the time that naturally passed throughout the process remain, and so it was born as a place that respects locality and reveals the nature of Seongsu.

The second was openness and simplicity.
Since Seongsu has quite a bit of land, there are many places with terraces or gardens. We opened up a section that was once used as a parking lot as much as we could, and put an incredible amount of effort into tearing down the barrier between the bar and garden. Now the moment you step into the garden, you can see the barista making coffee behind the bar, and simply standing in the garden does not feel awkward or uncomfortable. We thought about how even passersby could stop in and feel at ease. The space is largely divided into the garden and gallery, with the 1st floor bar as part of the garden, and the 2nd floor gallery also acting as visitor seating. By simply separating these two basic, clear functions by floor and removing the visual barrier between the garden and bar, we hope O’sechill can become a place people can easily frequent or pass by as if visiting a neighborhood park. This coincides with our vision that we must reduce prejudice and obstacles when viewing artwork — viewing it with sentiment.
